Smiths Triumph Reigning British Supersport Champion, Smiths Triumph Racing, is set to join this year’s Triumph Young Guns scheme as part of the judging panel and mentoring team. A number of the Smiths personnel, including reigning champion Glenn Richards and team manager Rebecca Smith, have agreed to become an integral part of Young Gun’s competition. They will provide help and guidance to the riders as they progress through this year’s competition.

The factory-backed Smiths team was a dominant force throughout the 2012 season and will be out this year to retain its British Supersport title. In addition, the Gloucester-based outfit will bring its expertise and knowledge of developing a championship-winning team to Britain’s young racing talent through its support of the Young Guns.

After two successful years, Triumph is again looking for the next generation of promising young riders to take part in this year’s competition to win a factory-supported ride within the 2014 Triumph Triple Challenge. Established to find the UK’s race stars of tomorrow, the Young Guns scheme is open to all amateur ACU-licensed riders aged between 15 and 21.

Ten lucky riders will be selected to take part in the 2013 Triumph Young Guns scheme, with each contestant receiving the opportunity to be mentored by key industry figures on the core skills needed to succeed in the world of professional motorcycle racing. Successful applicants to the Young Guns scheme will be provided with a number of tailored training sessions throughout the year, delivered by a series of industry experts, focusing on issues such as personal fitness, racecraft, bike set-up/development and marketing/promotion.

Following these sessions, the ten riders will be assessed by a panel of judges, including a professional rider, race team manager, MSVR management and senior figures fromTriumph, to whittle the field down to the three Young Guns finalists.  The finalists will then go head-to-head on the track, with the overall winner of Triumph Young Guns 2013 announced in October.

Guy Masters, general manager of Triumph UK, said: “We’re really excited about the addition of the Smiths Triumph Racing team into the Young Guns competition. Their knowledge and experience will offer our aspiring riders a true insight into how a factory-backed team operates, as well as providing excellent technical knowledge and help for a number of our seminar sessions.”

Rebecca Smith, Smiths Triumph team manager, added: “We are all looking forward to being a part of the Young Guns project this year. This competition plays a very important role in nurturing the next crop of British racing talent, which is hugely important for us as a team. Team managers look for riders who perform, both on and off the bike, and the Young Guns competition encourages British racers to develop these skills.”

The deadline for entries to Triumph Young Guns is Friday, 19th April 2013. Application forms can be obtained via the Triumph website:
