Leaving the UK in early September, Jonathan will be riding a modified KTM 690 Enduro R machine supplied by P&H Motorcycles based in Crawley and KTM UK, through Europe and Africa, stopping at a children’s orphanage in Zimbabwe. P&H have also been busy prepping his machine and adventure kit, which includes long distance luggage, sat nav and protection from the elements.

Multihelp Trust Orphanage are currently helping 30 orphaned children between the ages of 4 and 16 in Zimbabwe. Their current water borehole collapsed, so they’re using a temporary borehole which is not adequate enough. Riders for Health, the official charity of MotoGP, is helping to mobilise thousands of health workers with reliable and well maintained motorcycles so they can reach even the most remote communities, providing low-cost, high impact health care

Paul Searle, P&H Motorcycles Owner, said, “We are proud to be supporting Jonathan on his journey to Cape Town. It sounds like a dream for many of us, but he will face some very tough days and he is doing it all to raise money for two great causes. Along with the KTM, we will be supplying him with the essential items he will need to successfully complete his journey and on behalf of all of us at P&H Motorcycles, we wish him the very best of luck!

We spoke to Jonathan ahead of this exciting adventure to find out more;
How did you come up with this idea?
I have been riding motorcycles from a young age, and it has always been my desire to embark on a big trip. Cape Town has always seemed like a good goal, and I figured if I did not disconnect from my career and do an adventure like this now, I would never get to do it. I have always wanted to be involved practically with a project to help people, so raising money for charity was a must.
What are you looking most forward too?
Seeing the world from a new angle is something I am really looking forward too, along with the sense of achievement upon reaching the southernmost point in Africa.
Why did you choose the KTM?
The 690 Enduro R is a perfect machine for when the conditions get tough; light, agile and plenty of torque. The comfort level is good with really top notch suspension which is vital for long days in the saddle and once I put the Dakar style bodywork, tank and screen on, it really is ready for a round the world adventure!

What are you worried about?
Going without a shower for many days! But on a serious note, there are parts of Africa that can be dangerous, so it’s going to take quite a bit of patience dealing with the difficult situations that may arise.

Why are you fundraising? How did you find the project?

I want to give something back as I ride, so through Bert Smit from ADRA UK I was fortunate to find the project in Zimbabwe.  I want to help the Orphanage be self sufficient, and give them a chance to grow produce to sell at market.  Being an engineer means I can contribute in a practical way too! More details of the project, including a link to donate can be found on my website www.overlandride.com.  Riders for Health is a great charity that delivers very practical help to so many people.
How long do you think the trip will take?
I plan on it taking 3 or 4 months to reach Cape Town, depending on how bad the roads are – at least my motorbike is an off-road one so it should be more than capable of handling anything!
