Sources are reporting that the board of Audi Volkswagen Group will agree to pay a cool €860m ($1.1b) for Ducati which includes debts of under €200m.

It is believed that Audi and the current owners, Investindustrial, may withhold announcing the final purchase price although this may be announced at the Annual Shareholders meeting being held a day later on the 19th April.

The deal will allow VW to make up for an opportunity it missed nearly 30 years ago when it failed to buy the company. Volkswagen then also expressed further interest in the brand in 2008 when it lost out to Investindustrial the current owners.

The purchase of Ducati by Volkswagen is being viewed by many financial analysts as trophy hunting and Ducati will now sit alongside other purchases including Lamborghini, Bugatti, Audi and Porsche.

An auto industry analyst commented,”The purchase does have a trophy feel to it, in the sense of something you might mount up on the wall next to the stag you shot last year,”

One thing is for sure, Volkswagen has desired this brand from afar for a long time and it now has the opportunity to share its passion with Ducati riders around the world.
